To obtain maximum speed and optimum handling, it is vital that your boat hold the correct running attitude. This can vary depending on your boat's weight, how that weight is distributed, the boat's speed and prevailing water conditions. Trim tabs provide additional planing area (which alone can help a boat if it's a little stern-heavy and tending to "porpoise") and, more importantly, tabs give you the ability to adjust the angle (or attitude) at which the hull runs across the water. A perfectly balanced boat will need little or no tab effect, so you can adjust them up for minimum drag and higher speed. But many boats need a little down adjustment on the tabs to get the best running attitude - especially in choppy conditions when the waves can cause an "untabbed" boat to bounce and lose speed and stability. Tabs can also be adjusted individually to overcome uneven lateral weight distribution. Correctly adjusted tabs will give you faster planing from rest, improved speed, higher safety and enhanced overall performance.
